Famine in the horn of Africa

The worst drought has hit the horn of Africa (Somalia). More than 10million people have been affected. Thousands of families have shifted their home. The number of people needing food is increasing and it is expected to continue to worsen through 2011. The refugees from Somalia have been travelling for a long distance from their villages to the neighbouring countries. Kenya is one among the countries which receives so many refugees from Somalia which are running out of their country because of the drought and the civil wars which are going on there. More than 1000 Somali refugees cross Kenya almost everyday though there is no room for them. Dadaab, the Kenyan refugee camp has more than three times it's capacity. It was declared full since 2008.

Pope Benedict XVI

During his weekly blessings to pilgrims, Pope Benedict XVI urged the world not to forget the victims of famine in the horn of Africa. He said "Many brothers and sisters in the Horn of Africa are suffering these days from the dramatic consequences of the famine, aggravated by war and the lack of stable institutions. We must not be indifferent to the tragedy of the hungry and the thirsty. Let us give food and share our bread with the needy.”
